Totes vs. Cardboard Boxes

What actually changes when you move with rented totes instead of cardboard.

Cardboard boxes have been the default for a long time, so it’s worth asking what you really get by switching.

Before the move

With cardboard, the work starts before you pack anything. You find or buy boxes, bring them home, fold them into shape, and tape the bottoms.

With totes, we drop them at your driveway. Open the lid and start packing.

While you pack

A box needs tape on the bottom and tape on the top. A tote has a lid that snaps on.

Boxes come in whatever sizes you could find. Our totes are all the same size, so they stack neatly no matter what’s in them.

On moving day

This is where the difference shows up most.

  • Carrying. Totes have handles. Boxes have to be hugged.
  • Stacking. Tote lids are made to stack. A cardboard stack is only as strong as the box on the bottom.
  • Weather. Rain doesn’t bother plastic. Wet cardboard gets soft fast.
  • Rolling. Every package includes a free Tote Taxi, so you can roll a stack of totes instead of carrying them one at a time.

After the move

With boxes, you’re left with a pile to break down and get rid of.

With totes, you stack the empties and we pick them up. We clean them and they go out on the next move. It’s a greener way to move, and it’s one less chore for you.

What about cost?

Our packages start at $99 for 20 totes for two weeks, and that includes delivery, pickup, a Tote Taxi, and sales tax. See the pricing page for all three packages.

When boxes still make sense

If you’re shipping things across the country or storing them for years, you’ll want something you can keep. For a local move where you pack, move, and unpack within a couple of weeks, totes are the easier way to go.
