How Many Moving Totes Do I Need?

A simple way to figure out your tote count, starting with how many bedrooms you have.

The honest answer is “it depends on how much stuff you have.” But there’s an easy place to start: count your bedrooms.

Start with your bedrooms

Your home Where most people start
Studio or 1 bedroom 20 totes
2 or 3 bedrooms 40 totes
4 or more bedrooms 60 totes

Those match our three packages, and each one comes with a free Tote Taxi (one, two, or three of them) so you can roll your stacks instead of carrying them.

When to add a few more

Bedrooms are a starting point. You’ll probably want extra totes if you have:

  • A lot of books
  • A full kitchen with small appliances and plenty of dishes
  • A packed garage, basement, or storage room
  • Kids’ rooms with a lot of toys
  • A home office

You can add totes 5 at a time for $20, up to the next package size. So if 20 feels a little tight, 25 or 30 might be just right.

When you might need fewer

If you’ve lived somewhere a short time, you’ve just decluttered, or a lot of your things are furniture rather than small items, the smaller package may be plenty.

What doesn’t go in a tote

Totes are for the things you’d normally box up. Furniture, mattresses, lamps, and big artwork travel on their own, so don’t count those.
